Admission Requirements
The most basic requirement for admission to our programs is a strong desire to learn about music recording and production. It is recommended that you have a high school diploma or equivalent. Daily textbook assignments will require this level of reading ability, and classroom participation requires conversational English and basic math skills.

Recording Workshop students must be at least 18 years old at the start of classes. Exceptions are sometimes made for students that are 17. In these cases, registration forms must be signed by parent or legal guardian and high school transcripts must be submitted for admission to be considered.

To insure the high quality of its programs, the Recording Workshop maintains strict maximum class sizes. Admission is subject to available space and will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

Class Attendance and Performance Requirements
Recording Workshop students are expected to attend all classes unless prevented by personal illness or emergency circumstances. Students with an excusable absence are responsible for reporting and arranging make-up work as soon as possible. To receive a Certificate of Completion, a student cannot miss more than 20% of scheduled class hours.

Through testing and critique classes, students are given feedback of their performance several times during their training. Scores are presented as percentages compared to a class average. An overall final evaluation score is calculated for each student based on a combination of test scores, critique scores and subjective observations of studio performance. A student’s final evaluation cannot be more than 20% below the class average to receive a Certificate of Completion. This final evaluation is compiled and mailed with graduation certificates approximately three weeks after the end of the session.

Student Conduct and Enrollment Termination
Students must abide by all local and state laws and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. The Recording Workshop reserves the right to terminate the enrollment of any student guilty of disruptive behavior or destruction of Recording Workshop property. Tuition refund in such a situation will be determined in accordance with school policy concerning voluntary withdrawal. In addition to directing complaints to our administrative offices, students may direct such concerns to: State Board of Career Colleges and Schools, 35 E. Gay Street, Suite 403, Columbus, OH 43215. Phone: 614-466-2752.

Withdrawal and Tuition Refund
All tuition payments for any Recording Workshop program are 100% refundable up to the start of classes. Students who withdraw after partially completing their Recording Workshop training are refunded their tuition less a daily charge. Our main 5-Week program has a daily charge equal to 5% of tuition. All other programs have a daily charge equal to 15% of tuition. No refunds are given after the completion of one half of any Recording Workshop program. Students are responsible for providing direct and verifiable communication of their withdrawal request.

Subject to administrative approval, students who must withdraw from classes due to personal illness or emergency circumstances may return at a future Recording Workshop session to complete their training with no additional tuition charge.

Registration Procedures
To register for the 5-week Recording Engineering and Music Production Program, please carefully read all information on the Registration Form and answer all questions as completely as possible. Your choice of full tuition payment or a tuition deposit of $300 in appropriate funds must accompany your registration. Registration Form and tuition payment are mailed to:

Registrar
Recording Workshop
455 Massieville Rd.
Chillicothe, Ohio 45601

After we receive it, processing your registration usually takes just a few days. We’ll send you a confirmation of acceptance soon thereafter. About 6 weeks before classes start, you will receive a Student Prep Kit. This mailing will provide information to help you prepare for a successful learning experience. It will also contain details necessary to finalize housing and travel arrangements.

This description of registration procedures presents a normal timeline. However, it is possible to accelerate the process if you’d like to get in a session that’s about to start. Assuming space is available, phone calls, faxes and email can reduce the total registration process to a couple of days. Registration Forms that indicate credit card payment can be faxed to 740-663-2427.

If you are pursuing financial aid options, your registration process will have extra steps that can require substantial amounts of time for approval. Whatever the funding source, the key to having things work smoothly is clear communication. Forms you receive that request personal information should be filled quickly, completely and with accuracy.

Open House
You should plan to arrive on either the Friday or Saturday just before the first day of classes. These days are what we call Open House and the Recording Workshop staff and facilities are primed to welcome incoming students, their families and visitors in general. This structure gives students a chance to meet each other and get settled in their housing before classes start on Monday morning.

Registration for the Optional Programs
To help our students decide about taking the optional programs, we do not accept registrations until all students have had the benefit of two weeks of training in our main 5-Week Program. This allows the opportunity to thoroughly sample the high quality of our teaching methods before making any further commitments.

Registration for these programs takes place during the third week of classes. Acceptance into these optional classes is subject to available space, the order in which students sign up and performance in the 5-Week Program.

Financial Aid

New Funding Available for Recording Workshop Students

SLMThe Recording Workshop has partnered with SLM Financial Corporation ®, a Sallie Mae® company, to offer Recording Workshop students Career Training Loans(SM) through SLM Financial®. More info..

The Recording Workshop makes every effort to keep tuition costs affordable. Even so, some students need financial aid to make training possible. Federally backed conventional student loan programs are designed for longer-term study and do not apply to the short-term programs we offer. However, alternative funding is often available through other government programs and special interest organizations. Eligibility requirements for these financial assistance programs vary greatly. Contacting your local employment services office is the best way to explore which of these funding sources are available to you.

Another potential source of assistance is the SmartStart Student Loan. This is a low-interest loan program that offers eligible students up to $1800 in tuition credit. Administered by the Recording Workshop, the SmartStart Loan is specifically designed for students with good academic history and true financial need. This need is determined by household income and family size (adjusted gross income and dependents as per the most recent tax return). As an example, for a student from a family of four to be eligible for the full $1800, household income cannot exceed $21,000. In addition, approval is subject to review of credit history, school transcripts and having U.S. citizenship. For broader eligibility requirements and a SmartStart Loan application, please contact us.

Students of Capital UniversityCapital University
For those students working towards a 4-year degree in music or communications, the Recording Workshop is an excellent hands-on supplement. Such an arrangement has been formally structured between the Recording Workshop and the Capital University Conservatory of Music in Columbus, Ohio. Participating students can earn a Bachelor of Arts in Music/Commercial Music Degree with the Recording Workshop supplying up to 12 semester hours of credit. If you are a student of Capital University, please include a short note with your registration form indicating this status.

All students wishing to supplement their Recording Workshop training with classes at Capital University are subject to its registration procedures and policies. For course, tuition and registration information, please contact:

Dean, Conservatory of Music
Capital University
1 College & Main Street
Columbus, Ohio 43209

Phone: 614-236-6474

Students of Other Colleges
Students enrolled at other degree-granting institutions can often apply their Recording Workshop training to these programs through a credit transfer process with Capital University. There is a fee structure associated with this service. Please contact us for more details and necessary forms.

Update Policy
To allow for the continual improvement of its training programs, the Recording Workshop reserves the right to update curriculum and studio content as described in this brochure. In addition, the Recording Workshop reserves the right to amend administrative policies and procedures.
